Meet Your Instructor
Hello, my name is Kenneth Persinger. I am the Fire Science instructor here at CCTE. I retired from the El Paso Fire Department as a Captain and Paramedic. I spent 22 years on the fire department and had a great career. I am excited to be able to share my experience and my enthusiasm for the fire service. Being a firefighter is a rewarding career on many levels. I hope that you consider this for your future. I am excited to help you get there!

Fire Science Courses

1st Year
Firefighter 1: HT2L2AY2 or HT2L2DY2-13029900
2 Credits-Year-long Course
Firefighter 1 introduces students to firefighter safety and development. Students will analyze Texas Commission on Fire Protection rules and regulations, proper incident reporting and records, proper use of personal protective equipment, and the principles of fire safety.

2nd Year:

3 Credits-Year-Long Course

Firefighter 2 is the second course in a series for students studying firefighter safety and development. Students will understand Texas Commission on Fire Protection rules and regulations, proper incident reporting and records, proper use of personal protective equipment, and the principles of fire safety. Students will demonstrate proper use of fire extinguishers, ground ladders, fire hoses, and water supply apparatus systems.
2nd Year:
Criminal Investigation: HT3L1AY1 / HT3L1DY1-13029550
1 Credit-Year-Long Course
Criminal Investigation is a course that introduces students to the profession of criminal investigations. Students will understand basic functions of criminal investigations and procedures and will learn how to investigate or follow up during investigations. Students will learn terminology and investigative procedures related to criminal investigation, crime scene processing, evidence collection, fingerprinting, and courtroom presentation. This course will focus on Arson Investigation as seen in the fire department. Through case studies and simulated crime scenes, students will gain an understanding of the fire investigation process and the determination of the origin and cause of fires. Students will learn about the types of evidence that Fire Investigators use during the investigation of fires.

This course offers an opportunity for Dual Credit or Articulated Credit in-conjunction with El Paso Community College (EPCC).
